Carlos Yulo was born and raised in Manila, Philippines. Having trained at the early age of 7, he was nothing short of the best athlete in the making. He started training when his grandfather, Rodrigo Frisco, saw him tumbling at a local playground and brought him to the Gymnastics Association of the Philippines for training. He attended primary education at Manuel A. Quezon Elementary School in Manila, where he was already training as part of the National Capital Region’s gymnastics team. He then attended Adamson University for his secondary education. In 2016, Yulo accepted an offer by the Japan Olympic Association to train in Japan under a scholarship, attended college at Teikyo University, and graduated in 2022 with an associate degree in literature.

He started competing at such an early age and he was already making a name for himself. He won the Palarong Pambansa finishing with a score of 79.35 and placed fifth in the individual all-around with a score of 26.15. The next day, he won silver in the floor exercise with a score of 13.325. From there, Carlos Yulo was encouraged to train harder for his next Palarong Pambansa.

Road to Paris Olympics 2024

Carlos Yulo began the 2024 season with a bronze, in which he won the floor exercise at the Baku World Cup. He then won gold on the parallel bars and a silver medal on the vault at the Doha World Cup. Meanwhile in Tashkent, he won his first continental championship all-around title at the Asian Championships. He won three more gold medals in the finals.

During the qualification round of the Olympics 2024 in France, Carlos Yulo qualified for the men’s individual all-around, vault, and floor. He first competed in the individual all-around last July 31 with a score of 83.032 and placed 12th overall. On August 3, he competed in the men’s floor exercise and placed with a score of 15.000 points. He then made history by being the first Filipino gymnast and the second Filipino man to win an Olympic gold medal. The following day, Yulo won his second gold medal and that win made him the first-ever multiple-time Olympic champion.
